Once upon a time, in a cosy little cottage in a cosy little village, lived a grumpy old lady.
She had no family; the only joy in her life was baking.
She would spend most days baking in her kitchen.
Her kitchen and home always had the lingering smell of warm spices, sugar, and melted butter.
Despite the sweet aromas in her home, the old lady was anything but sweet.
One winter's morning, she decided to try her hand at baking a gingerbread man.
She got to work, measuring out flour, brown sugar, mixed spices, and the star ingredient - ground ginger!
To her dry mixture, she added an egg, molasses, and a splash of milk.
Combined, the ingredients formed a spicy, rich brown dough that the old lady kneaded with all her might.
With the same force she used to knead the dough, she rolled it into a flat, lifeless square.
Her excitement grew as she breathed life into the dough, pressing her gingerbread man cookie cutter into it to form a little man with a head, arms, and legs!
Now she said, "It's time to dress my gingerbread man".
She placed rainbow candy buttons on his face for eyes and four more down the centre of his body for buttons. Out of icing sugar, she crafted a smile and a bow tie.
My oh my, how dandy you look, she thought to herself.
He was like the little boy she never had!
As the gingerbread baked in the oven, his body transformed into a striking, crunchy, sweet biscuit man.
The aroma of ginger, molasses, and spices wafted through the house and into the garden, distracting the old lady as she chopped wood for her fire.
She licked her lips in anticipation and hurried on with her chopping so she could hurry back in to devour her creation!
The oven timer chimed. She raced to the kitchen and opened the oven door.
The gingerbread man had come to life, staring back at her with sparkly eyes, colourful candy buttons, a perfect bow tie, and a cheeky grin.
The old lady reached in to grab him, but he had no intention of being eaten.
With a sudden burst of energy, the gingerbread man leapt off the baking tray, laughing out loud.
He began to run. "Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me—I'm the gingerbread man!" he shouted, dashing out the door.
Shocked and in disbelief, the old lady ran as fast as she could to try to catch him.
"Stop, you naughty boy!" she exclaimed, but the gingerbread man was too quick.
He sprinted down the lane, looking back at her with his cheeky sugary smile, singing his merry tune, "Run, run, as fast as you can! You can't catch me—I'm the gingerbread man!"
Pretty soon, the entire village joined in, all eager to catch the biscuit man that had come to life!
He was too fast for the old lady and the townsfolk.
Determined not to be eaten by the grumpy old lady or anyone in the town, he ran and ran, swinging his gingerbread arms through the air and taking big strides with his long, crunchy legs, singing his merry tune.
That evening, the old lady went to bed hungry, with a grumbling tummy, after losing her supper - her dashing gingerbread man!
From that day forward, whenever the lady baked gingerbread, she crafted a uniform of gingerbread men (in case one got away, which they did from time to time), with rainbow candy buttons for eyes, four more down the centre of their bodies for buttons, and finished them off with icing sugar smiles and bow ties.
As for the charming gingerbread man, no one knows where he landed.
Let's hope he lived happily ever after in a magical gingerbread house adorned with rainbow-coloured buttons and a smooth icing facade, alongside the other gingerbread men who had managed to escape the grumpy old lady!
